Vattenfall’s wireless charging station inaugurated on new electric bus route

The first hybrid electric bus route in the Nordic region with wireless bus stop charging is inaugurated in Södertälje, south of Stockholm. The city bus is charged rapidly and invisibly at Vattenfall's charging station.

Metro Manila Bus Rapid Transit project approved

The National Economic and Development Authority (NEDA) Board in Philippines gave the green light for the 48.6-kilometer Metro Manila Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) – EDSA project. The project’s total estimated cost is PhP37.8 billion and it is expected to be operational in 2020.

New vision for collective passenger transport in East Africa with launch of regional high level group

24 November 2016

Jointly initiated by UN-Habitat and IRU, the East African Community (EAC) Smart Move high level group will work for a period of one year to devise a roadmap for boosting collective passenger transport in EAC’s cities and on EAC’s roads by 2030. Benefits include better transport services, reduced carbon emissions, more jobs, fewer road deaths and reduced road congestion by up to fifteen percent.

German bus industry calls for fair competition between municipal and private companies

22 November 2016

During its Experts’ Forum in Public Transport, held last week in Berlin, the Federal Association of German Bus and Coach Operators made it clear that it opposes changes of the German Passenger Transport Act. The discussions revolved around the fact that the application of the law is currently producing tensions between municipal and private companies, with the European Commission being also skeptical regarding its implementation by municipalities.

Green buses to run in Cape Town next year

In its effort to reduce carbon emissions, the City of Cape Town has announced the roll out of 10 electric buses for the MyCiTi service in 2017. The tender, valued at R126 million was awarded to BYD, a Chinese electric car and rechargeable battery manufacturer which has a branch in South Africa.

Contactless bus travel across UK for Stagecoach users by end of 2018

Stagecoach, one of the UK's biggest bus and coach operators, will deliver contactless bus travel on all of its regional bus services across the UK by the end of 2018. Passengers will be able to pay for their travel with a contactless credit or debit card, as well as Apple Pay and Android Pay.

EU campaign promotes travel within Europe

According to Eurostat, in 2015 the number of nights spent in tourist accommodation establishments in the European Union is expected to have reached a new record level of around 2.8 billion nights, up by 3.2 % compared with 2014.
