The IRU to intervene at a workshop focusing on the new regulations concerning cabotage and its different cases of application across Europe, Brussels, 5 March 2014.
19 March 2014 - UITP (International Association of Public Transport) is organising on the 5 March, in Brussels, a workshop focusing on the new regulations concerning cabotage and its different cases of application across Europe.
Just over 12 months ago Germany liberalised its long distance inter-city coach market, which had been severely restricted in order to prevent any competition for the German railways. The German inter-city coach market is no fully open and has seen a staggering 125% growth in passenger numbers in its first year of operation, bringing much-needed competition to the German domestic collective passenger transport sector.
The opening of these bus lines gives more choices and new opportunities for customers to travel more and at an affordable price, attracting young people, students and those looking for the comfort and convenience which is not always offered by railway companies.
The workshop will discuss the implications of EU Directive 1073/2009 and its different cases of application in Europe - with a particular focus on France, Germany, Spain - the market, opportunities and challenges for regional and international bus and coach operators.
