Christmas-themed buses bring cheer to commuting in Sydney

A battle between the best Christmas-themed buses took place on Dec. 14, where three finalists faced off in front of Sydney's Town Hall for the annual event.

It's the 10th year of the competition run by the State Transit Authority of New South Wales, building on a staff tradition to decorate buses and dress up in Christmas costumes for the holidays; just to make that early morning or late afternoon ride a little more sprightly.

These buses are decorated with enough tinsel to get you itchy, there's plenty of Santa paraphernalia, and don't forget — the miniature Christmas tree too.

In total, nine buses were decorated for the competition this year, with judging of the finalists an intense affair.

Six-year-old Zoe Hall, a patient from the Sydney Children's Hospital, and her younger sister Abby were the special guest judges — taking their time to decide who would be crowned king of the Christmas buses.

It was a close competition, but the Mona Vale bus depot vehicle took it out — winning a A$500 (US$362) donation to their charity of choice, in which they chose community service organisation Mission Australia. An equal sum was donated to the Sydney Children's Hospital too.
